Unattributed. "The Camel ... The Dromedary ... The Wild Ass or ... Zebra ... The Giraffe or Camelopardus. The Manticora of Ctesius."
From John Harris’ Navigantium atque Itinerantium Bibliotheca. or, A Complete Collection of Voyages and Travels. London, 1743. 12 3/8 x 7 1/2. Engraving. Very good condition.
The fantastical Giraffe is accompanied by an even more fantastical Manticore and a fairly realistic Zebra in the bottom illustration. At top, The (Bactrian) Camel is accompanied by its Dromedary cousin. The primitive and imaginative qualities of early artwork depicting creatures of myth or faraway lands can be particularly delightful.
