Carroll Tyson (1878-1956). Plate 162. “Coopers Hawk” From Twenty Birds of Mount Desert.
Milan: Otto Hoesch, 1934-35. 28 x 20. Off-set color lithograph. Signed in plate and in pencil by the artist. Edition: 250. Mounted to old backing board but stable. Else, very good condition. A/A
Tyson’s dramatic group of the birds of Mount Desert Island, Maine is well represented by this handsome print, issued loose in a portfolio after the originals by Tyson with no accompanying text. The first edition of these prints was limited to 250 copies. Prints and printmaking were extremely popular during the early 20th century in the U.S. and Europe. Reproductions of many well known series such as Audubon and Currier & Ives were produced during this period. Of the spectrum of quality from this period, this print is a fine example of the highest type of representation that could be achieved by off-set lithographic technique.
