After Jacques-Joseph (James) Tissot.  “News of Our Marriage.”

London: Pilgeram & LeFever, 1873; New York: M. Knoedler, 1874.  24 ¾ x 18 ¼ (image).  Engraving by William Simmons (1811-1882).  LeFever blind stamp in bottom margin left hand side.  A large sheet and strong strike.  Irregular tear in image by man’s boot skillfully repaired and in-painted.  Repaired short tear into margin.  Else, very good condition.

Tissot (1836-1902) came out of the French schools and did much of his work in England.  He began illustrating scenes from the bible and classical literature such as Faust.  Tissot’s most popular subjects were women who were depicted in his scenes known as “La Femme a Paris.”  His models were expressive women who wore elegant fashions accompanied by fabrics and furniture.  In this picture the texture of the newspaper is contrasted with the soft cotton clothing of the couple next to the river Thames during a warm day.  This print was displayed at the International Exhibition in London in 1874.  The publisher issued a companion print by Tissot a year earlier titled “Les Adieux.”
