William Strickland.  “The Woodlands.”  From The Casket

Philadelphia: October 1830.  4 1/8 x 6 3/8.  Engraving.  Hand color.  Very good condition.  A/A

The Casket was a typical nineteenth century illustrated magazine, published by Samuel C. Atkinson in Philadelphia from 1826 until 1839, after which the publication was purchased by George R. Graham and renamed Graham’s Lady’s and Gentleman’s Magazine.  It included articles, stories, poetry, puzzles, and many steel engraved illustrations.  The images were generally borrowed from other publications, as is the case with this image of the Woodlands based on a drawing by William Strickland.  The mansion was the ‘seat’ of William Hamilton, and it was built about 1742 and enlarged in 1788.  It is located on the west side of the Schuylkill at Fortieth and Woodland Avenue, and its grounds are currently used as a cemetery.
