John Stockdale. "Part of the United States of North America." A/A
London: John Stockdale, 1798. 16 1/2 x 18 1/2. Engraving. Original outline coloring. Fold lines as issued. Very good condition.
A fascinating map illustrating some of the travels of Isaac Weld, who journeyed through Upper and Lower Canada and into the young states of the United States. While the frontier for American settlers clearly extended beyond the Appalachian Mountains, the map shows surprisingly few settlements in Kentucky, with only three towns identified. By contrast, the “Western Territory” (modern-day Ohio) features at least ten named towns, many bearing Native American names. A large inset in the lower right depicts the states of South Carolina and Georgia.
