Samuel Sloan. “Perspective View.” [St. Stanislaus Church, Fitzwater Street, Philadelphia].
From City and Suburban Architecture. Philadelphia, 1859. Ca. 12 1/2 x 8. Tinted lithograph by L.N. Rosenthal. Chipping in left margin. Very good condition.
Samuel Sloan (1815-1884) was a Philadelphia architect who was particularly important for a series of influential volumes he issued on the subject. These included The Model Architect (1852), City and Suburban Architecture (1859), Sloan’s Constructive Architecture (1859), American Houses (1861), and Sloan’s Homestead Architecture (1861). Sloan also wrote for and edited The Architectural Review from 1868-70. This is an attractive sample of his style, and a good example of Philadelphia lithography.
