Franz A. Schraembl. “Karte der Magellanischen-Strasse…”
Vienna: F.A. Schraembl, 1788. 20 ¼ x 26 ¾. Engraving. Very good condition.
Franz Anton Schraembl (1751-1803) was an Austrian cartographer in the last quarter of the eighteenth century. His maps are very finely produced, with excellent engraving and paper. This very detailed map of Strait of Magellan incorporates the discoveries of Herrn, Byron, Wallis, Carteret and Bougainville. The map includes a tremendous amount of information including Indian villages, coves, points, inlets, mountains, and rivers. Also shown in the sears are soundings, anchorages, shoals and currents. A volcano erupts in Terra de Fuego. The information for this map is taken from Juan de la Cruz's important eight sheet map of South America.
