L. Sabatier and Lauvergne. “L’Océan, vaisseau de 120 canons en armement”. From Le Peintre de Marine.
Paris: Goupil, Vibert & Co. and London: E. Gambart & Co., ca. 1855-70. 9 3/4 x 15. Lithograph. Wide margins. Excellent condition.
A delicate, yet accurate print of an old French ship of the line quietly moored in a harbor. The view is from the stern, and all the ships gunports are shown open. The top of her masts have been removed and only the lower portion remain. Out in the harbor is a similar craft with her masts cut down as well.
