William Nicholson. “M for Milkmaid.” From An Alphabet.
New York: R.H. Russell, 1898. Ca. 9 ¾ x 7 ¾. Color lithographic transfer from wood block. Very good condition.
This print is from a charming set of depictions of the alphabet in the Arts and Crafts style of the turn of the 20th century. Each letter is depicted by an illustration of a man or woman whose title or occupation begins with that letter. Some are funny, some charming, others represent terms which have since fallen into disuse. For their rich Arts and Crafts style, as well as their overall simplicity, these are fine illustrations.
