S. Augustus Mitchell Jr.  “New York and Brooklyn.”

Philadelphia: S. Augustus Mitchell Jr., 1867.  13 ¼ x 20 ¾.  Lithograph.  Original hand color.  With decorative grape vine border.  Diagonal crease upper left hand corner reinforced with archival tape.  Old binding glue on verso.  Else, good condition.

This map was published by S. Augustus Mitchell Jr., who had taken over his father’s firm in 1860, maintaining the company as one of the largest cartographic firms in the world.  The map depicts and names streets, rail lines, and major buildings.  Individual areas of the city are colored in a contrasting, pastel shade.  A fine decorative border surrounds the map, and the whole effect makes for an attractive late-nineteenth century map.
