Francois Andre Michaux. "Plate 77- Rose Flowering Locust". From The North American Sylva.
Philadelphia: Thomas Dodson, 1817-1819. 10 x 6 1/4, sheet. Stipple engravings. Original hand color. Very good condition.
A beautiful edition of this important work on North American botany, which first appeared in Paris, 1810-1813. The original manuscript was the result of the labors of François’ father André, a well-known French botanist who first came to America in 1785. The full control of the collected research was passed onto F.A. Michaux after his father’s death in 1803. This was the first illustrated American silva, and it became the standard reference on the subject though disputed by some in the scientific community of the period. The success of the volumes prompted the publication of various editions throughout the nineteenth century.
