Kellogg. “Washington. First in War, First in Peace and First in the Hearts of his Countrymen.”
Hartford: E.B. & E.C. Kellogg; New York: Kelloggs & Thayer; Buffalo: D. Needham, ca. 1850. 11 3/4 x 8 1/2. Lithograph with original hand color. Some smudges in margins. Overall, very good condition. Framed in a period style veneered frame.
A strong portrait of George Washington by the Kellogg brothers and their associates Thayer in New York and Needham in Buffalo. Portraits and depictions of the founding fathers and events surrounding the Revolutionary War and the Declaration of Independence became very popular subjects at the middle of the 19th century to attempt to quell the murmurings of dissent between the "free" and "slave" states of the Union. This is one such portrait in a period frame.
