A.J. Johnson. "Johnson's Delaware and Maryland." Inset: "District of Columbia." New York: Johnson & Ward, 1864. 12 3/4 x 16 1/2. Lithograph. Full original hand-color. Small chips at edges of margins, else, very good condition.
A.J. Johnson, who published out of New York City, was one of the leading cartographic publishers in the latter half of the century, producing popular atlases, geographies and separate maps. This map is a nice example of Johnson's, and thus early American, cartography. It shows detailed and political information, including fascinating information on the roads and railroads which criss-crossed the district at this time. With its attractive hand color and strap work border, this map is as attractive as it is interesting.
