Charles C. Henderson (1803-77). “The Olden Time.” From Fores' Coaching Recollections.
London: Fores, 1846. 17 3/4 x 27. Aquatint by John Harris. Original hand color. Very good condition.
Messrs. Fores are amongst the most famous British nineteenth century publishers of sporting and genre scenes. Between 1845 and 1856, they set out to publish an impressive series of sporting sets, including Steeple Chase Scenes, Hunting Accomplishments, Hunting Casualities, Contrasts, Hunting Sketches, Coaching Incidents, Coaching Recollections, and so forth and so on. These series were after paintings by the excellent artists Henry Alken Snr. and Charles C. Henderson and they were all superbly aquatinted by John Harris. The quality of Harris’ work well serves the delightful and charming subjects. This fine print is after Henderson and shows a mail coach getting ready to leave an inn. The print was produced at a time when the railroad was beginning to supplant the old coaching system in Britain, and this Coaching Recollection would have been quite as popular a subject then as it is now.
