[Winter in the Country].
Boston: Haskell and Allen, ca. 1870. 8 x 12 1/2. Lithograph. Original hand color. Title trimmed off. Else, very good condition.
The firm of Haskell & Allen was one of the chief rivals of the New York firm of Currier & Ives, and this charming image shows why their prints were so popular. Haskell started as picture framer and print seller; listed in 1868 Boston directory as partner in Haskell & Ripley (18 Hanover St.). A year later he formed partnership with George F. Allen. In 1873 they moved to 61 Hanover St. They prospered until about 1875, and they went bankrupt in April 1878.
