A commissioned print by the Saint Paul Companies presented to George W. Meartz for his outstanding accomplishments in service to the company.  

Gordon Hope Grant (1875-1961) had his formative years in San Francisco.  During the nineteenth century San Francisco was one of the largest seaports in the United States.  One can assume, that from living in this bustling sea town he acquired his love of ships and the sea; this subject dominated his work.  Grant studied at Lambeth and Heatherly Art School in London, and he acquired the skills of lithographer, etcher, painter, illustrator, and muralist.  He was particularly noted for having extensively studied, or experienced, his subject prior to rendering it.  He did this in order to give his work realism.
