William Gibb. Pl. 48 "Japanese Koto." From A. J. Hipkins’ Musical Instruments Historic, Rare, and Unique.
Edinburgh: Adam and Charles Black, 1888. 12 1/2 x 8 1/4. Folio. Chromolithograph. Very good condition.
One from a series of beautifully realized prints of musical instruments of all types from the nineteenth century and earlier. Detailed images of string, wind, and percussion instruments show great interest in the magnificent craftsmanship that went into the creating of these music makers. The rich finishes of the woods are shown with convincing illusion, and much attention is lavished on sumptuous veneers and hand carving, and on elaborate painted decoration. Looking at these prints, we are reminded how much pleasure a well turned out musical instrument can give to the senses of touch and sight, as well as hearing.
