Fumagalli. [Natives of Fort de France, Martinique]. From Giulio Ferrario’s Il Costume Antico e Moderno.
Florence, 1823-31. 6 ¾ x 9 ½. Aquatint engraving with full original hand coloring. Full margins. Fine condition.
A print from a series of very attractive prints drawn by Fumagalli from a rare Italian work on the “costumes” of all parts of the world. The prints in fact illustrate scenes, customs, decorative motifs, and many other aspects of all four corners of the globe... The images appear to have been based on first hand sources, and so they provide fascinating information of the places shown. Besides this, the workmanship, delicacy of line, and precise detail make these rare prints wonderful examples of fine Italian craftsmanship at the beginning of the nineteenth century.
