Herman Frederick Deigendesch. "Capture of Fort Ticonderoga."

Philadelphia, ca. 1876-1920. 16 x 12. Etching. Signed in pencil. Small tears in upper left and right hand corners. Else, great condition.

Fort Ticonderoga was captured on May 10, 1775 by Ethan Allen's Green Mountain Boys and Benedict Arnold's Massachusetts Militia. The attackers utilized a surprise night attack, and an open gate, to penetrate the fortress. The small British garrison (amounting to 2 officers and 46 enlisted men) was caught by the surprise attacked and surrendered without a shot being fired.
