M. Dahl, 1714.  “The Honourable S. Thomas Hardy Knt. Late Rear Admiral of the Blue Squadron of His Majesties Fleet.”

London: Bowles and Carver, ca 1795.   Mezzontint engraving by John Faber, 1722.  Laid paper.  20th century hand color.  Some toning to paper.  Else, very good condition.  Ref: Smith, British Mezzotinto Portraits: 180.

This print is most likely the third state with the first state being issued in 1722 by John Faber.  Carrington Bowles acquired the plate and a second state was issued with his name and address and the inventory number “27” added below the image.  In 1794, Carrington Bowles acquired a partner John Carver which continued to flourish in London from 1793 until 1832. Upon the death of Carrington Bowles (1724-1793), his firm was taken over by his son Henry Carington Bowles (1763-1830). Bowles and (Samuel) Carver published prints and maps from old copper plates and disseminated them throughout the world.
