J.H. Colton. “Territories of New Mexico and Utah.”
New York: J.H. Colton & Co., 1857-58. 11 3/4 x 14 5/8. Lithograph. Full original hand-coloring. Neat line border with text on verso. Very good condition.
In the mid-nineteenth century, the center of map publishing in America moved from Philadelphia to New York. The J.H. Colton publishing firm played a large role in this shift. This map of the territories of New Mexico and Utah also encompasses present day Arizona & Nevada. With its fine detail it is a strong example of their successful work. The map presents the counties in contrasting pastel shades, and includes notations of towns, rivers, lakes and some topography. Of particular interest are the indications of the burgeoning transportation network in the territories, with trails, roads and railroads clearly shown. An attractive map as well as a worthwhile historical document.
