J. Carpenter. “Lancaster.” From Atlas of the State of Pennsylvania by Joseph R. Bien, E.M.
New York: Julius Bien & Co., 1900. 18 x 26 1/2. Chromolithograph. Very good condition.
Julius Bien directed the compilation of maps of Pennsylvania cities and localities based on work compiled by the U.S. Geological Survey, U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, U.S. Lake Survey and the Second Geological Survey of Pennsylvania. These clearly depicted and brightly colored maps of the population centers of Pennsylvania are fine examples of the attention to detail typical of the Julius Bien lithographic establishment. Bien is best known for his edition of the Double Elephant folio of Audubon’s comprehensive series on North American birds.
