Samuel J. Brown.  “Latin and English High School Buildings, Boston, Mass.”  [façade and floor plan].

Boston: J.H. Bufford, 1877.  17 ¼ x 29 (image boundary line); 18 x 31 ¾ (floor plan neat line).  Reheotype engraving.  Two repaired tears in floor plan margins with light smudges in margins in both prints.  Else, very good condition.  Sold as a pair.

Designed by George A. Clough (1843-1910) and built in 1877 these buildings once occupied the block bounded by Warren Avenue and Dartmouth, Montgomery, and Clarendon Streets.  The Boston Latin School is the oldest school and first public school in the United States.  The school’s curriculum was based on the European model of teaching Latin, Classical Literature and Religion in order to prepare the students for college.  The English High School was established in 1821 as a school for working class boys to prepare them for jobs in business, mechanics, and engineering.
