A dramatic portrait by Thomas Hart Benton (1889 –1975), one of the most well known American artists of the early 20th century.  A painter, printer and muralist,  he along with Grant Wood and John Steuart Curry, was at the forefront of the Regionalist art movement.  The movement was started in direct opposition to Modernism and celebrated uniquely American landscape and life in a representational style.
