William Henry Bartlett. “Fairmount Gardens with the Schuylkill Bridge, Philadelphia.” From N.P. Willis’  American Scenery

London: George Virtue, [1839-1840].  Approx. 5 x 7 (image).  Steel engraving.  Uncolored as originally issued.  Light foxing in margins.  Else, good condition.

William Henry Bartlett (1809-1854) was a British landscape artist famous for his views of all parts of the world.  He made four trips to the United States to gather sketches for his book of views of America. This charming collection of natural wonders, architectural monuments and city landmarks was one of the most successful and popular series of such views to date.  This lovely picture of the gardens behind the Water Works is typical of the delicate images that set Bartlett apart and have made his prints ever sought after.  The scene is looking south from one of the paths which led to the top of Fairmount, the current site of the Philadelphia Art Museum.
