Jules Chéret.  “Grand Théâtre de l'exposition Palais des Enfants.” From Ernest Maindron’s Les Affiches Illustrées 1886-1895.

Paris: G. Boudet, 1896.  Approx. 10 x 7 Chromolithograph. Very good condition.

A print from Ernest Maindron’s Les Affiches Illustrées.  Maindron (1838- 1908) was the most popular producer of posters in late nineteenth century Paris.  These posters became increasingly popular due to the new three stone lithography process invented by artist Jules Chéret.  This procedure could produce a plethora of vibrant colors by using just three stones (usually red, yellow, and blue).  Other notable artists in this series include Toulouse-Lautrec, Ibels, Grasset, and Choubrac.

These images are the quintessential representation of the Belle Époque era.  Advertisements for food, theater, and wine are fantastically illustrated through lavish dress and ornate design, epitomizing the Art Nouveau style.
