[Winter in the Country].
Boston: Haskell and Allen, ca. 1870. 8 x 12 1/2. Lithograph. Original hand color. Title trimmed off. Else, very good condition.
The firm of Haskell & Allen was one of the chief rivals of the New York firm, and this charming image shows why their prints were so popular. Haskell started as picture framer and print seller; listed in 1868 Boston directory as partner in Haskell & Ripley (18 Hanover St.). A year later he formed partnership with George F. Allen. In 1873 they moved to 61 Hanover St. They prospered until about 1875, and they went bankrupt in April 1878.
