Charlemagne & Duruy. "Foire et Ville Basse de Nijni-Novgorod.” [Russia].

Paris: Daziaro, ca. 1850. 10 3/8 x 14 3/8.   Tinted lithograph by Jacottet & Regamey. Original hand color.  Narrow margins.  Print mounted to backing board but print is stable.  Else, very good condition.

This print is from a series of  Russian views published in the 19th century.  Prior to 1990, this city, located on the Volga River, was called Gorky.  All of the prints from this series depict bustling pedestrian activity and grand Russian architecture.  Interesting, these peaceful scenes were published in France around the time of the Crimean War.  Most of the scenes include military troops, perhaps alluding to the upcoming turmoil between the two countries.  With or without these historical overtones, the prints offer a lovely view of the Russia during the mid nineteenth century.
