“Stockholm.”  [Sweden].

Probably printed circa 1690 to 1720.  7 3/4 x 13 (image) plus margins.  Attractive hand coloring.  Conserved with repair to slight separation at centerfold.  Very good condition.

Panoramic view based on Braun and Hogenberg’s view which first appeared in 1588.

This baroque engraving focuses on the northern city gate with the fortifications.  Details of wooden houses in the foreground can be contrasted with the palace and cathedral in the town proper.  Details showing windmills, docks and fish hatcheries attest to the growing economic importance of Stockholm that began after the Middle Ages and continued into the Enlightenment Age.
