William M. Bennett.  “Broadway from the Bowling Green, 1828. Views of New York Plate. 1.”

London: J. R. Hutchinson, ca. 1898.  10 ¼ X 16 ½ (image).  Etching.  Original hand color.  Deak: 350.  Print not examined out of frame and sold as is.  A/A

This print is based on an earlier aquatint of the same view done by William Bennett and published by Henry Megarey circa 1834. Hutchinson was a London fine art printmaker and publisher.  The original aquatint did not have a colored border surrounding the print nor the descriptive text below the image.  William Bennett was an English immigrant and a landscape artist and etcher.  Before immigrating Bennett had worked for London print publisher and seller Rudolph Ackermann, and it was probably this connection which led him to end up working for New York publisher Henry J. Megarey.  Megarey was the first publisher to commission prints from Bennett in the late 1820s.  Even though this etching was issued some sixty year after the original aquatint print it is still a fine view of New York City in the early 19th century.
