Schutzenfest was the annual festival held by American Shooting Society which was comprised of many German-American shooting societies across the nation. The third meeting took place in 1868 between June 12th and July 6th in Jones Wood which was situated on the East River between 66th and 75th Streets. Jones Wood was a wooded resort of working-class New Yorkers in the 1860s and 70s, which had such amenities as a hotel, dance pavilion, shooting range, beer gardens and other sporting facilities. The shooting platform shown in this print was located on 70th Street. A large portion of Jones Wood was destroyed by a fire in 1894.
