Woodbridge & Willard. "Physical Map of the United States".

With insets at right of four Eastern city harbors: Boston, New York, Philadelphia & Baltimore. Boston: William C. Woodbridge, ca. 1848-50. From Modern Atlas, to Accompany Woodbridge and Willard's System of Universal Geography. 10 1/2 x16 3/4 (neat lines). Engraving. Hand color in neat lines and states of Delaware, Georgia, Michigan & South Carolina. Center fold as originally issued. Several tears in corners of map all expertly repaired and not affecting image. Map has been professionally conserved and lined with rice paper. Else, very good condition. Scarce.

Originally published in 1843, this map is an updated edition issued just after the end of the Mexican-American War. The Gila River boundary established with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo between Mexico and the US is clearly indicated by dash lines. The border was not adjusted south until 1854 with the Gadsden Purchase. Great Salt Lake is indicated but not Salt Lake City which was founded in 1847. The vast area of the great American Desert is indicated. There is no mention of gold in California nor is the name of Texas noted at all in the map, even though it was admitted to the Union as a state in 1845. Overall, a very informative map of the United States after the end of the Mexican American War.
