At the end of the nineteenth century, an impressive volume of maps reflecting the events and political settings of the Civil War was issued in conjunction with the official records of the two opposing armies. Julius Bien directed the compilation of maps for this atlas. These clearly depicted and subtly colored maps show fine detail of boundaries between North and South, as well as further divisions within. The maps are fine examples of the attention to detail typical of the Julius Bien lithographic establishment. Bien is best known for his edition of the Double Elephant folio of Audubon’s comprehensive series on North American birds.
