This map shows the United States as it was known for a very brief period. The newly created Territory of Alabama is shown (created from Mississippi Territory when it gained statehood in 1817. Alabama gained statehood in 1819). Illinois Territory, which was created in 1809 and gained statehood in 1818, is shown with Native American tribes located and the Illinois Company shown (the Illinois company was comprised of men from Virginia, Maryland, Philadelphia and London who held claims to land in the Illinois Country and sought to establish towns and develop trade). The vast Missouri Territory was nearly all land west of the Mississippi River. The Northwest Territory would later become part of the Dakotas, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa. West and East Florida would be ceded to the United States by Spain in 1819.
