R. Brookes. “The Southern States and Mississippi Territories.”
From Brookes's General Gazetteer Improved. Philadelphia & Richmond: Johnson & Warner, 1812. 2nd. American edition. 7 1/2 x 9 1/2. Engraving. Narrow margin at bottom as issued.
An interesting map of the southern parts of the United States, issued in Dr. R. Brookes’s gazetteer of the world from 1812. The states shown are: the Carolinas, Tennessee, and Georgia almost in their eventual configuration. The Mississippi Territory would become Mississippi and Alabama. While West Florida is delineated, East Florida is not because the latter was still considered a Spanish possession as was Louisiana. Besides political boundaries the map shows major mountain ranges and waterways.
