A.J. Johnson.  “Johnson’s Florida.” with inset “Florida Keys.”

New York: Johnson & Ward, 1863.  12 x 15 1/8.  Lithograph.  Full original hand color.  With decorative strap work border.  Small spot in Gulf of Mexico as is common in Johnson maps.  Light water stain in bottom margin.  Else, very good condition.

A.J. Johnson, who published out of New York City, was one of the leading cartographic publishers in the latter half of the century, producing popular atlases, geographies and separate maps. This map is a nice example of Johnson's, and thus early American, cartography. It shows detailed and political information, including fascinating information on the roads and railroads which crisscrossed the district at this time. With its attractive hand color and strap work border, this map is as attractive as it is interesting.
