William Nicholson. “June.” [Cricket]. From An Almanac of twelve Sports.
London: William Heinemann, 1898. Ca. 7 ¾ x 7 ¾”. Color lithographic transfer from wood block. Very good condition.
This print is from a set of depictions of sports corresponding to the twelve months of the year, executed in the Arts and Crafts style of the turn of the 20th century. Each month is represented by an illustration of a person or persons participating in an appropriate sport for the time of year. Some of the images are funny, some charming, others represent tense or fiercely competitive events. For their rich Arts and Crafts style, as well as their overall simplicity, these are fine illustrations.
