Charles Magnus.  “Bankettsaal und Gabentempel des Dritten Amerikanischen Bundes-Schiessens. New York, 12. June bis 6. Juli”  [Banquet Hall and Building of Prizes of the Third American Shooting Society].

New York: Charles Magnus, 1868.  11 x 9 ¼.  Lithograph.  Full two page letter sheet.  Scattered spotting at top.

Schutzenfest was the annual festival held by American Shooting Society which was comprised of many German-American shooting societies across the nation.  The third meeting took place in 1868 between June 12th and July 6th in Jones Wood which was situated on the East River between 66th and 75th Streets.   Jones Wood was a wooded resort of working-class New Yorkers in the 1860s and 70s, which had such amenities as a hotel, dance pavilion, shooting range (70th Street), beer gardens and other sporting facilities.  A large portion of Jones Wood was destroyed by a fire in 1894.

Charles Magnus was a prolific publisher of maps, prints and letterheads before, during and after the American Civil War.  Centered in New York, the firm worked diligently to create detailed views, maps of many American cities, scenes and events.
