John Callcott Horsley, R.A. (1817-1903) "Checkmate - Next Move.”  From International Exhibition of 1876 Official Catalogue, Part II.

Philadelphia: Centennial Catalogue Company, 1876.  9 1/2 x 13 3/4.  Wood engraving by H. Harral.  Very good condition.

From a catalogue of prints and text, depicting artifacts of art and industry that were displayed at the buildings of the great Centennial Exposition in Fairmount Park, Philadelphia.  This world’s fair was an occasion of great pride for the people of the United States, and it gave a terrific impetus to American manufacturing and art.  As masterpieces from all over the world were displayed at the exhibition halls, Americans had a wonderful opportunity to examine them at first hand.

The painting made by British artist, J.C. Horsley in 1862, was loaned to the Exhibition by Thomas Jessop, Esq., J.P.

Horsley is possibly best known for creating the first Christmas card.
