Churchill Ettinger was completely at home in the world of field sports, and his work reveals keen observation. Collectors and museums have made numerous purchases of his works. Ettinger was born in Haworth, New Jersey on 10 May 1903 and studied art at the National Academy of Design, the Art Students League and the New York School of Industrial Art. In the mid-twentieth century the leading sporting magazines featured illustrations by Ettinger on covers taken from oil paintings. At one time he was portrait artist on the staff of the New York Sunday World and Outlook Magazine. His works are found today in collections such as Yale University, Iowa State University, Nelson Gallery (Kansas City), and the Honolulu Academy of Fine Arts. This etching was done in the 1950s or later when he lived in Weston, Vermont.
