Ann Gregory Terhune with Patricia Smith Scanlan. Thomas Hovenden: His Life and Art.
Philadelphia: 2006. Cloth.
A study of Thomas Eakins' and Thomas Anschutz' contemporary at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Thomas Hovenden (1840-95). Hovenden's subjects were of the period, but unlike many of his contemporaries, he depicted African Americans, as in his best known work, "The Last Moments of John Brown," where Brown is stopping en route to the gallows to kiss a small black child.
