Napoleon Sarony (1821-96) is one of the great names in American lithography.  As a teenager, Sarony emigrated to New York from Quebec, where he had been born of English parents.  He began to work for a number of lithographers including Henry R. Robinson and, most importantly, Nathaniel Currier.  Sarony was one of Currier’s most important artists, and indeed he was one of the leading American lithographers of the middle of the century.  In 1846 Sarony went into partnership with Henry B. Major as a print publisher, and he remained in business in various different companies until the early 1870s.  Majority of his prints were lithographs printed in black & white and colored by hand.
