"Washington. First in War - First in Peace, and First in the Hearts of his Countrymen."
New York: N. Currier, 1838-56. Small folio. 12 x 8 5/8. Lithograph with original hand color. Smudges in margins. C:6536.
Nathaniel Currier, and later Currier & Ives, "America's Printmakers," issued many prints on political and social themes, and beginning quite early this included portraits of the presidents. These show a president, often seated, in front of a column and hanging drape. The series was probably inspired by the contemporary living president, but Currier & Ives completed it back to Washington and every president in between. Such prints would have been hung in the homes of patriotic Americans and they are wonderful examples of the output of this great American print publisher.
