After Pierre F. Tardieu (1711-1771) from a drawing by Madame de Brehan.  “George Washington.”

From Voyage dans La Haute Pensylvanie et dans l’Etat de New York..., by Michel-Guillaume Saint Jean de Crevecoeur.  Paris, 1801.  5 3/4 x 4 (neat lines).  Stipple engraving by Barthélemy Roger (1767-1841).  Narrow margin right hand side.  Else, very good condition.  Rare.  Baker: 113.

This rare profile bust portrait of Washington was initially drawn in 1789 by Madame de Brehan, the sister of the Count de Moustier, the French Minister to the United States.  The print has a definite French neoclassical style, with the laureated Washington placed in the center of a circular medallion, in the upper part of a rectangle.  The print is done in stipple, a medium that enjoyed a vogue from about 1790 to 1810.
