Joseph Sims.  (1890-1953) "Blue Anchor Inn. 1682."

1952. 9 x 11 1/2. Lithograph. Signed, dated and titled in pencil.

Joseph Sims (1890-1953) was born in Philadelphia.  He studied at the University of Pennsylvania and was a member of the American Institute of Architects, and the Philadelphia Print Club (now the Print Center).  Sims exhibited his work with the Southern Print Makers in 1942.  His work can be found at the State House in Philadelphia, the Library of Congress and various public libraries in several cities.  Sims co-authored the book "Old Philadelphia Colonial Details" which was published in 1914.  He also specialized in decorative, historical and animal maps.  Sims' lithographs are very much of the urban school of the 1930s and 1940s.  He produced a number of interesting prints, mostly architectural, depicting Philadelphia and regions of the United States.  All of the works are of a quality that reflects Sims' background as an architect; his trained eye focuses our attention on interesting details of the buildings he so lovingly portrayed.
