Walter Hood Fitch. Pl. 6052 "Yellow swamp orchid." From J. D. Hooker’s Curtis’s Botanical Magazine.
London: L. Reeve & Co., 1830-75. Octavo. Lithograph. Original hand-coloring. Excellent condition.
From a group of vibrant prints from one of the greatest sources of botanical illustration. Curtis’s Botanical Magazine is renowned for its contribution to horticultural science, and Walter Hood Fitch was one of the magazine’s best known and most successful illustrators. He worked for them for over forty years, between 1834 and 1877, and was described by J. D. Hooker himself as an “incomparable botanical artist” with an “unrivaled skill in seizing the natural character of a plant.” Fitch was also known for his animated and bold treatment of his subjects. This colorful and adventurous print is a wonderful example of Fitch’s expert work.
