C. E. Doepler (1824-1905). [Frontispiece] From Colton’s American Atlas.
New York: J. H. Colton, 1855. 13 ¼ x 11 ¼ (vignette). Engraving by C. Wise. Some minor wrinkling in paper. Else, very good condition.
In the mid-nineteenth century, the center of map publishing in America moved from Philadelphia to New York. The Colton publishing firm played a large role in this shift. This engraving is the frontispiece from Colton's atlas. This scene shows four Native Americans on a bluff overlooking a homestead and other elements of civilizations in the distance. One Native American is pointing possibly as a warning of the encroachment of the “white man.”
