Jacques-Joseph (James) Tissot (1836-1902). “News of Our Marriage.”
After a painting with oils and engraved by William Simmons (1811-1882) 24 ¾ x 18 ¼ (image) plus full and generous margins. A large full sheet and strong strike.
This artist came out of the French schools and did much of his work in England. He began illustrating scenes from the bible and classical literature such as Faust. His most popular subjects were women who were depicted in his scenes known as “La Femme a Paris.” His models were expressive women who wore elegant fashions accompanied by fabrics and furniture. In this picture the texture of the newspaper is contrasted with the soft cotton clothing of the couple next to the river during a warm day.
