Snyder, W.P. "Sleighing in Central Park." From Harper's Weekly.

New York: Harper’s Weekly, February 27, 1886. Double folio: 22 x 16. Wood engraving. Very good condition.

This image shows horse drawn sleds going through Central Park. In the background is the famous Dakota Apartments located at 72nd & Central Park West. The scene was drawn by W.P. Snyder a Golden Age American illustrator and wood engraver. He was known for detailed scenes of American life and riverboats (sternwheelers).

In its day, Harpers Weekly was one of the best sources for lively, informative images of America and it remains so, today.  Each issue was filled with popular genre and detailed historical prints through which much of the country got its visual information about their world.  Views of American landscapes were among the most popular of prints of the period, and this is a particularly nice example of that genre.
