Peter J. Guthorn. United States Coastal Charts 1783-1861.
Exton PA, 1984. Out of print. Cloth.
A comprehensive study of the survey and development of US coastal charts, beginning mostly with those of British origin after the Revolutionary War, and progressing to completely American sources, as a "survey of the coast" was ordered by Congress during the Jefferson administration. Though hampered by the War of 1812, many private publishers filled gaps until the government survey was able to produce accurate maps in the 1840s.
